Ontario pauses OSAP at private postsecondary institutions

Three business professionals discuss printed charts and graphs together around a conference table with laptops and folders in an office high-rise.

Ontario has paused OSAP at private postsecondary institutions while an independent audit examines concerns about the integrity of applications in the sector. The Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security said preliminary findings raised concerns including inadequate student validation and unusually concentrated application activity.

OINP Scoring Changes 2026: New $80K 10-Point Rule

Four Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment documents laid out on a wooden desk next to a printed Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program earnings scale sheet.

Ontario has added a new top score for Canadian earnings history in the Ontario Workforce Priority stream. Effective October 5, 2026, candidates who earned at least $80,000 in one calendar year within the past five years can receive 10 Expression of Interest points when that income is supported by a Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment. The OINP says the change was applied automatically to existing active EOIs, so registrants do not need to update their profiles simply to receive the additional points.

Forward-Facing Risk, Hussain v. Canada, 2026 FC 1218

A brass balance scale on a wooden desk is flanked by open and stacked legal files, casting soft shadows under library shelves filled with law books.

The Federal Court dismissed a Bangladeshi refugee claimant’s application for judicial review after finding the Refugee Appeal Division reasonably concluded that changed political conditions meant he had not established a forward-facing risk. In Hussain v. Canada, 2026 FC 1218, decided October 2, 2026, Madam Justice Go also declined to let the Minister raise a new argument about the timeliness of the court application for the first time in a further memorandum of argument.

Internal Flight Alternative, Nwobi v. Canada, 2026 FC 1229

A brass balance scale sits centered on a wooden desk surrounded by piles of legal documents and papers with highlighted text in a law library.

The Federal Court dismissed Mr. Nwobi’s application for judicial review of the refusal of his refugee claim, finding no reviewable error in the Refugee Appeal Division’s internal flight alternative analysis. In Nwobi v. Canada, 2026 FC 1229, the Court found it was reasonable for the RAD to conclude that he had not shown it was impossible to relinquish disputed inherited property to relatives he feared.

Outland Sponsorship for Canadians Living Abroad

A woman seated at a wooden desk reviews paperwork with photos and writes notes in a home office decorated with Canadian-themed items.

A Canadian citizen who is living outside Canada can sponsor their spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner for permanent residence through the Family Class process commonly called Outland Sponsorship. The key requirement is that the Canadian citizen must prove they will live in Canada when the sponsored spouse becomes a permanent resident. A permanent resident of Canada cannot sponsor a spouse while living outside Canada.
