Online passport renewal is now available to all eligible adult Canadians in Canada, IRCC announced today. Applicants can submit their renewal application, photo and payment digitally rather than mailing documents or visiting a Service Canada Centre.
How the online renewal service works
The expanded service removes the previous limit on the number of people who could renew their passports online. Applicants need to submit a digital photo file from a commercial photographer, along with their application and payment.
IRCC says the requirements for online passport renewal differ slightly from those for renewals submitted in person or by mail. Canadians should check the requirements before beginning an application.
Service standards and other passport options
Online renewals have the same 20-business-day service standard as simplified adult renewal applications submitted by mail and at most Service Canada Centres. The online service also provides real-time status updates while an application is being processed.
In-person and mail-in application options remain available. Canadians who need a passport sooner must apply in person at a Service Canada Centre or passport office offering 10-business-day, express or urgent service.
IRCC said the expansion follows other passport service changes, including an online application status checker, broader access to in-person 10-business-day service at select Service Canada Centres and the passport service guarantee for applications processed within 30 business days.
