Canada will restore a two-year NEXUS interview deadline for applicants who receive conditional approval on or after April 1, 2027. The Canada Border Services Agency says the change replaces the temporary five-year timeframe introduced during COVID-19 disruptions.
New deadline starts April 1, 2027
Applicants conditionally approved on or after April 1, 2027, will have two years from their conditional approval date to schedule a NEXUS enrolment interview.
The timeframe is returning to the original two-year rule as more enrolment interview capacity becomes available, according to the Canada Border Services Agency.
Rules for applicants approved before the change
Applicants who were conditionally approved before April 1, 2027, must schedule their interview within five years of their approval date or by April 1, 2029, whichever comes first.
The CBSA advises applicants waiting for an interview to book an appointment as soon as possible so their application does not expire.
How the NEXUS interview works
After submitting an application, conditionally approved applicants must schedule an interview with both the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection before receiving a NEXUS card.
The CBSA portion takes place at a NEXUS enrolment centre. The U.S. CBP portion can be completed at a CBP enrolment centre or through Enrolment on Arrival. Interviews include identity verification, fingerprinting and questions from CBSA and U.S. CBP officers.
