Visitor Record Canada: Extend Your Stay, Apply and Maintain Status
A visitor record can document an authorized stay or an approved extension in Canada, but it is not an entry visa. This guide explains when to apply, what to prepare, fees, maintained status, restoration after status loss and the risks of confusing an extension with permission to travel or work.
1. What Is a Visitor Record?
A visitor record documents the conditions and end date of an authorized stay in Canada. It may be issued at the border or after an approved extension or restoration. It is not the visitor visa sticker used for travel.
For a visitor already in Canada who wants to remain longer, the relevant extension is ordinarily a visitor record application. Getting another TRV or eTA does not automatically extend the stay already authorized.
Your visa or eTA expiry and your visitor status expiry can be different. Use the visitor visa guide and eTA guide for travel authorization.
2. Who Can Apply?
The process covers visitor extensions and certain changes from work or study permit status to visitor. It also covers some people independently authorized to work or study without a permit; a visitor record does not create those exemptions.
The entry document used originally does not determine whether an extension is needed. Someone admitted with an eTA and someone admitted with a visa both need to track their authorized stay.
Identify the actual objective before applying: more time as a visitor, a work or study authorization, or restoration after status loss. Those objectives should not be treated as interchangeable.
3. Find Your Actual Status Expiry
Check any departure date imposed at entry and the expiry of an existing visitor record or permit. For many ordinary visitors without a specified date, the usual stay is up to six months, limited by passport validity. Special categories and individual conditions can differ.
Do not take the date on a visa sticker as the last day of your current stay. If the documents conflict or your entry history is unclear, obtain advice before calculating a filing deadline.
As practical preparation, keep the entry date, passport records and any issued document together. A phone reminder based on the wrong date cannot protect status.
4. When Should You Apply?
IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before current status expires. The requirement to apply before expiry is distinct from that planning recommendation. Do not interpret the recommendation as permission to submit late.
IRCC uses UTC for electronic receipt. Midnight in your Canadian city is not necessarily the filing cutoff. Prepare early enough to account for uploads, payment problems and system availability.
As a practical safeguard, save the final submission confirmation, not just a payment receipt or screenshot of a draft. If expiry is close, seek timely assistance rather than waiting to collect optional documents.
5. Forms and Evidence to Prepare
Use the current IMM 5708 application instructions and personalized checklist; Guide 5551 also points to IMM 5558. The guide identifies identity, current status, reasons for the requested extension, support and departure arrangements as relevant evidence.
| Preparation area | Practical review |
|---|---|
| Identity and status | Compare passport, entry and current-document information |
| Reason for more time | Explain the genuine purpose and requested dates |
| Support | Show how living costs and departure will be funded |
| Accommodation | Explain where you will stay during the extension |
| History | Disclose relevant prior decisions and status issues accurately |
This is an organization aid, not a universal mandatory attachment list. For financial presentation, see proof of funds; do not import a settlement-funds threshold into every extension.
6. How to Apply Online
Follow the official visitor record page and use the designated online account. IRCC instructs applicants to select Visit for the intended activity and Canada as current residence when generating the checklist. Answer the remaining questions according to your circumstances.
- Read the current guide and confirm the correct request.
- Complete and validate the required forms as instructed.
- Upload readable evidence and review the checklist.
- Pay applicable fees and submit.
- Retain the complete application and confirmation.
- Monitor messages and respond to requests.
Online submission is normally required. IRCC lists limited paper situations, including disability or a problem with the online application. Do not assume printing an old form avoids the electronic-submission rules.
7. Visitor Record Fees and Family Applications
Checked October 12, 2026: extending visitor status costs CAD 100 per person. Restoring status as a visitor is a different service, currently CAD 246.25; it is not simply the ordinary extension fee.
Assess any biometric requirement or exemption separately. Additional costs such as translations are not government extension fees. Confirm the current official amounts before paying.
Each family member who needs more time must have the appropriate application and fee. Do not assume the TRV family fee cap is a visitor-extension family cap. Keep everyone's individual expiry dates visible even when preparing the applications together.
8. Maintained Status While Waiting
A qualifying, complete extension submitted before status expires can maintain temporary resident status while you remain in Canada awaiting a decision. IRPR section 183 governs the statutory extension and continuation of conditions.
For an ordinary visitor, this is permission to remain under the applicable conditions, not new permission to work. A draft, a new eTA, a records request or a permanent-residence application alone is not a visitor extension.
If an application is rejected as incomplete, IRCC treats it as never submitted; it may not provide maintained status. Do not assume any file uploaded before expiry is enough regardless of completeness.
As practical evidence, retain the application, receipt and dated submission confirmation. Review status promptly if the application is returned, withdrawn or refused.
9. Changing From Worker or Student to Visitor
If a worker applies to change to visitor, they must stop working when the existing work permit expires unless separately authorized. Similarly, a student changing to visitor cannot rely on that visitor request to continue studies after study permit expiry.
Maintaining temporary resident status and maintaining work or study authorization are different legal questions. An extension of stay does not itself renew a job authorization.
Plan the transition with your employer or school before expiry and assess any independent exemption or other pending application specifically. Do not let a generic statement about maintained status decide a work or study question.
10. Processing, Approval and Refusal
Use the current IRCC processing-time tool rather than a fixed article estimate. A pending application should still be monitored for requests. If approved, inspect the decision and new expiry date; the length requested is not automatically the length granted.
IRCC says the visitor record should arrive by mail within six weeks after the decision letter; contact IRCC if it does not. That delivery guidance is not the application processing time.
When an extension supporting maintained status is refused, that statutory extension ends on the decision date. The consequences differ if another authorized period applies. Review the timeline immediately rather than assuming extra time is automatic.
For legal-review context, see the Federal Court guide. Reconsideration or waiting for records is not status protection.
11. If Status Has Already Expired
A late ordinary extension does not automatically repair status. IRPR section 182 provides a conditional restoration route within 90 days after qualifying loss of temporary resident status. Other compliance and eligibility requirements apply; approval is not guaranteed.
The 90-day period is not an automatic visitor-status grace period. Restoration does not provide maintained status while awaiting a decision. Identify the actual loss date and circumstances, and get advice promptly if an application was returned or refused.
Do not work or study on the assumption that paying a restoration fee authorizes it. If restoration is unavailable or unsuccessful, departure and any further options require individual assessment.
12. Leaving Canada and Re-Entry
A visitor record does not guarantee re-entry or replace a required visa or eTA. Leaving Canada ends maintained status; a return is assessed separately at the border.
A limited visa exemption can apply to certain direct returns after visiting only the United States or Saint Pierre and Miquelon during the relevant authorized period. Do not apply it to other destinations, cruise travel through international waters or every pending application without checking the exact conditions.
Before buying travel, review the passport, required entry authorization, current status and pending application together. The official travel page and maintained-status instructions should be read together, not as a promise of admission.
13. Can You Extend More Than Once?
Guide 5551 permits repeat extension requests, but each requires a new application, fee and explanation of why residence remains temporary. Approval of an earlier extension does not promise another one.
As a practical review, compare the new request with the earlier explanation. If circumstances changed, explain them accurately. Check passport validity and avoid describing a plan to live indefinitely in Canada as a series of unrelated holidays.
14. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a visitor record the same as a TRV?
No. One concerns a stay in Canada; the other is a travel visa.
Can I apply after my status expires?
Assess restoration rather than assuming a late ordinary extension is valid.
Does a timely extension always give maintained status?
The application must qualify and be complete, and you must remain in Canada. Exceptions can apply.
Can I keep working after switching to visitor?
The visitor application does not continue an expiring work authorization.
Does an approved extension renew my visa or eTA?
No. Check travel authorization separately.
Do I automatically get another six months?
No. Read the actual decision and document.
What should I do if the application is refused?
Review the decision and status-loss timeline promptly. Do not assume reconsideration extends your stay.
