Canada Visitor Visa Application: Steps, Fees and Processing Time
A visitor visa application involves preparation, submission, possible biometric or document requests, a decision and passport handling. This guide explains the sequence and current fees without promising a fixed processing time or treating approval as permission to enter.
1. The Visitor Visa Application Sequence
- Confirm that you need a visitor visa for the trip.
- Prepare the applicable records and evidence.
- Complete the application using the current official route.
- Pay applicable fees and retain the submission.
- Respond to biometric and other requests.
- Review the decision and any passport instructions.
- Prepare for travel and border examination.
Separate administrative completion from the substance of your application. Uploading a file successfully does not establish that the explanation is persuasive or the document is complete.
Confirm the official fee list and any exemption before payment. Processing estimates and portal options can change.
2. Prepare Before Opening the Application
Collect identity, purpose, financial and relevant return-plan evidence. Use the document preparation guide to check consistency before uploading.
For practical organization, keep a working timeline of employment, residence, travel and previous immigration decisions. That reduces contradictions when the same history appears in several questions.
Prepare readable electronic records and check the upload limits shown by the system. Keep original records available rather than assuming a scan is the only version you may ever need.
3. Choose the Correct Online Route
Follow the official application page. Visitor applications are normally online, with limited paper exceptions described by IRCC. Do not choose a paper package solely because an old guide appears in search results.
The IRCC Portal has an additional new-version option for applicants who are at least 18, apply alone, have never applied to IRCC before and are not using a representative, including a family member or friend applying for them. Check the current criteria.
Do not create conflicting submissions to try several systems. If using a representative, make sure the representation arrangement and access process are accurate.
4. Current Visitor Visa and Biometrics Fees
| Fee | Amount in Canadian dollars | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor visa | 100 per person | Same application fee for single or multiple entry |
| Visitor visa family maximum | 500 | Eligible family of five or more applying together at the same time and place; dependent-child rules apply |
| Biometrics | 85 per person | Only where applicable |
| Biometrics family maximum | 170 | Eligible family of two or more applying together at the same time; check the defined family relationships |
For one applicant requiring biometrics, the illustrated government-fee total is CAD 185. This excludes translations, travel to an appointment, passport services and any professional assistance. Fee payment does not buy multiple-entry issuance or a particular validity period.

5. Biometrics: Follow Your Instructions
Check whether biometrics are required for your application and whether existing records can be used. Do not assume a friend's exemption applies to you or that old collection always resolves the current request.
When a biometric instruction letter is issued, read its deadline and appointment directions immediately. Save the letter and completion evidence. If an obstacle prevents compliance, follow the official procedure to explain it rather than ignoring the deadline.
The appointment is an administrative step, not an approval interview. Completing it does not establish that a favourable decision is imminent.
6. How Long Does a Visitor Visa Take?
Use Maple's current processing-time tool for the relevant application category and location. Read the explanation attached to that estimate, including whether biometric time is included.
A posted time is a planning estimate, not a deadline by which every individual file must be approved. Complexity, further information and other processing steps can affect the timeline.
For practical planning, record the category, selection and date when you check the tool. A screenshot from a different country or an older month is not the estimate for your application.
7. After Submission: Messages and Requests
IRCC may ask for more information, an interview, a medical examination or a police certificate. Follow the instructions given for your file. An incomplete visitor application may be refused.
As a practical safeguard, check the account used for submission and keep contact details current. If a representative receives messages, agree on how they will communicate deadlines to you.
Respond to the question asked, identify the application and keep a copy of the response. Do not assume sending an unrelated webform replaces a required upload.
8. Approval and Passport Submission
For an online approval, IRCC sends passport-submission instructions. You cannot travel on the approval message alone before the visa is placed in the submitted passport. Using a newer passport can delay processing and does not promise longer validity.
Review the issued document against your identity and intended travel. Keep enough time for passport handling and delivery rather than treating the decision date as the departure date.
Visa approval still does not guarantee admission. Carry relevant travel information and answer border questions accurately.
9. What to Do About a Delay or Refusal
Start by checking the correct status channel, outstanding requests and the current processing estimate. Create a concise record of submission, requests and responses before making an enquiry.
A delay is not an invitation to submit multiple duplicate applications or buy a guaranteed expedition service. If there is an urgent circumstance, explain it factually through the appropriate official channel without assuming priority treatment.
If refused, move to the refusal and reapplication guide. A new application and a court challenge are different processes.
10. Frequently Asked Questions
Is the government fee CAD 185 for everyone?
No. That combines a CAD 100 visa fee with CAD 85 biometrics for an individual who must pay both. Exemptions and family rules can change the total.
Does paying more buy a multiple-entry visa?
No. The same visitor application fee applies to single and multiple entry.
Can I book travel immediately after approval?
Complete the passport instructions and account for document delivery before relying on a departure plan.
Is a processing estimate guaranteed?
No. Check the live tool and allow for your circumstances.
