Alberta PNP: AAIP Requirements & Complete Guide 2026

Alberta PNP is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), which nominates eligible workers and entrepreneurs for Canadian permanent residence. This guide compares Alberta Opportunity, Express Entry, Rural Renewal, Tourism and Hospitality, and business pathways. It explains Worker Expression of Interest, employer support, documents, fees, application deadlines and work permit planning under the current provincial framework.

1. What Is Alberta PNP?

Alberta PNP is the common name for the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program, previously called the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program. Alberta selects nominees for its economic and workforce needs; IRCC separately decides permanent residence applications.

Start with the Provincial Nominee Program Canada guide for the national framework. This page focuses on choosing an Alberta pathway and preparing the provincial application and its supporting evidence.

Current framework checked October 10, 2026

AAIP requirements differ by stream. Review the applicable eligibility page, selection instructions and recent updates before relying on a job offer, permit or previous draw.

2. Alberta PNP Worker Streams Compared

StreamMain candidate profileKey distinction
Alberta Opportunity Workers already living and working in Alberta Current employment, permit type and job offer must fit the stream.
Alberta Express Entry Express Entry candidates aligned with Alberta priorities Federal eligibility and the selected provincial pathway both matter.
Rural Renewal Candidates with a qualifying job in a designated community Requires community endorsement as well as provincial selection.
Tourism and Hospitality Qualifying workers with an approved sector employer Has specific employer, occupation, permit and employment-history rules.

Decide which pathway fits the facts before comparing scores. Keep a separate checklist for the applicant, offered position, employer and, where applicable, community or professional body.

3. AAIP Updates Affecting Applicants in 2026

A CAD $135 Worker Expression of Interest fee took effect April 7, 2026. Alberta also added wage and hours fields to worker profiles and introduced editing functionality in May. Editing a profile does not restart its one-year validity.

Rural Renewal changes effective January 1, 2026 include community endorsement limits, one-year endorsement validity and revised permit and occupation rules. Use the current requirements rather than an older rural recruitment summary.

In August, Alberta published additional guidance on economic establishment for entrepreneur streams. The province described this as clarification of existing requirements. Business applicants should review that guidance alongside their proposal, operating plan and implementation obligations.

Maintain a dated record of the requirements used in your preparation. Recheck them before submission and when responding to requests; an earlier self-assessment does not resolve a later change in the applicant's circumstances.

4. Alberta Opportunity Stream Requirements

Alberta Opportunity requires qualifying Alberta employment, an eligible occupation and a valid eligible work permit. Maintained or restoration status does not substitute for that permit requirement. PGWP holders face specific Alberta institution, credential and occupation-related conditions.

Experience generally means 12 months in the current occupation in Alberta within 18 months, or 24 months in Canada or abroad within 30 months. Eligible PGWP holders have a six-month Alberta experience provision.

Language requirements are generally CLB/NCLC 5 for TEER 0-3 and 4 for TEER 4-5, in each ability. NOC 33102 requires 7. Education and any required ECA must also meet the stream rules.

Prepare a timeline linking the current occupation, permit, education and experience. Where a graduate's work relates to their studies, identify that relationship in the records rather than relying on a similar job title alone.

5. Alberta Express Entry Stream

Alberta Express Entry requires an active federal profile, eligibility for an Express Entry program and a minimum CRS of 300, alongside provincial occupation, pathway and draw requirements. CRS 300 is an eligibility floor, not a promise of selection.

Accelerated Tech Pathway

The technology pathway checks both the offered occupation and the Alberta employer's industry classification. A technology-related title or employment with a company that uses software does not establish the required fit. Check the published occupation and industry lists together.

Law enforcement and priority sectors

Law Enforcement has a specific international police recruitment process. Other selections target provincial sectors and occupations. Follow the requirements of the pathway and invitation actually issued to you.

Compare the NOC, dates and qualifications in the federal profile with the Alberta records. Read the Express Entry Canada guide for the separate federal assessment.

6. Dedicated Health Care Pathway

Alberta's Dedicated Health Care Pathway has Express Entry and non-Express Entry options. It requires a qualifying Alberta health-sector offer in an eligible profession and verifiable evidence of meeting the regulator's practice requirements.

Applicants who qualify for the Express Entry option must use it. The non-Express Entry option is for eligible health professionals who do not qualify for Alberta Express Entry; it is not simply an alternative portal selected for convenience.

Review the regulator's requirements and immigration requirements in parallel. Confirm the profession, practice arrangement and evidence of ability to practise before relying on the offer. An employer's need for a worker does not resolve professional registration conditions.

Where contracts or professional arrangements differ from ordinary employment, explain the arrangement clearly and check the pathway's specific provisions. The application should show who offers the work, what the professional will do and which records support the proposed arrangement.

7. Rural Renewal Stream and Community Endorsement

Rural Renewal requires a qualifying offer in a designated Alberta community and a valid Endorsement of Candidate Letter from its economic development organization. The letter is valid for one year; community support does not guarantee provincial selection or nomination.

Candidate locationEligible TEER range, subject to exclusions
In Alberta with a valid work permitTEER 0-5
Elsewhere in Canada with a valid work permitTEER 0-3
Outside CanadaTEER 0-3

Experience generally requires 12 months in an eligible occupation within the preceding 18 months, subject to applicable exceptions. Language, education, funds and occupation criteria also require review. Candidates in Canada must satisfy the valid-permit rule.

Check the community's recruitment and endorsement process before making relocation commitments. Align your employment and settlement plans with the community you genuinely intend to join, including the family's practical housing and service needs.

8. Tourism and Hospitality Stream

This stream is for qualifying workers living and working in Alberta with an approved tourism or hospitality employer. The employer's industry, WCB coverage and sector membership requirements must be assessed alongside the worker's occupation.

Applicants need the specified six consecutive months of qualifying work with their current employer, a qualifying full-time offer, eligible permit, education and language evidence. The current permit provisions cover a positive LMIA for an eligible occupation or specified wildfire measures; other permits are not automatically accepted. Maintained status is not a substitute for a valid permit.

Check the exact employer and occupation rules before counting work at different establishments. A transfer, ownership change or change in the legal employer can require a closer review of which records establish continuity.

Keep contracts and payroll records together. They should consistently identify the employer, position, dates and hours relied on in the application.

9. Alberta Job Offer and Employer Requirements

Supporting employers generally need a legitimate registered business, an Alberta operating location and at least two complete fiscal years of active operation. Employment normally must be paid, full-time and for at least 12 months, with appropriate wages and a genuine need for the position.

The general revenue and staffing benchmark is CAD $400,000 annual gross revenue and three full-time equivalent Alberta employees. Smaller employers may qualify under limits tied to years of operation. Certain public and Indigenous employers have exemptions, and healthcare arrangements have specific employment provisions.

Review exclusions and any additional stream rules before relying on casual work, self-employment, agency arrangements or remote work. The worker and employer must provide the required supporting documents together.

Agree early on who will collect business records and sign forms. Compare the offer, payroll information and position description before submission. A supportive employer may still need time to establish the program's requirements.

10. Worker EOI and How to Apply

  1. Assess the stream. Check the applicant, employer, job offer and any community or regulator support.
  2. Submit a Worker EOI. Declare accurate information and pay the applicable fee. The profile normally remains valid for 12 months.
  3. Await selection. Alberta considers scores, labour needs, priorities, capacity and application volumes. A profile does not guarantee an invitation.
  4. Act on the invitation. You have 15 days to accept and create and save the draft application. Read the instructions before taking that step.
  5. Complete the application. Once the draft is created, you have 30 days to complete, submit and pay. Include the required evidence for the invited pathway.
  6. Respond and report changes. Follow portal instructions during assessment and the nomination package if approved.

Keep the invitation and draft-creation dates on a calendar. Check account access, document availability and employer availability before the deadline approaches.

11. AAIP Draw Scores and Selection Priorities

The Worker EOI score and federal CRS score measure different things. An Alberta Express Entry candidate may need both, but one number cannot be substituted for the other.

Alberta's 2026 processing page identifies priorities including healthcare, technology, construction, manufacturing, aviation, agriculture and designated rural communities. Draw conditions vary by stream, sector and pathway.

A previous draw is not a guarantee

Compare only relevant rounds. Check the targeted occupation, location, job offer and other conditions before comparing a score. A candidate meeting a previous minimum is not assured selection in a future round.

Do not treat nomination spaces as a queue position. For planning, maintain accurate evidence and a valid status plan rather than assuming a fixed selection date from the size of the pool or another applicant's timeline.

12. Alberta PNP Document Checklist

Use the current AAIP Worker Streams Document Checklist for the invited pathway. Typical preparation categories include:

  • identity, passport and family records;
  • Canadian status and work permit evidence where applicable;
  • the employer declaration and supporting business records;
  • employment contracts, references and compensation evidence;
  • education documents, ECA and language results where required;
  • professional licences or evidence of ability to practise;
  • community endorsement for Rural Renewal; and
  • federal Express Entry details for linked pathways.

Check which records are mandatory for your stream rather than uploading the same package for every pathway. Follow the specified translation and file requirements.

Match each claim to evidence. If a record omits hours, duties or dates, request clarification where possible. Explain unavailable records truthfully and retain the final submission and correspondence for subsequent requests.

13. Alberta Entrepreneur and Farm Streams

StreamBusiness focus
Rural EntrepreneurEstablishing or acquiring an eligible business with rural community support
Graduate EntrepreneurEligible Alberta graduates establishing or operating a qualifying business
Foreign Graduate EntrepreneurQualifying foreign graduates developing a start-up with designated agency support
FarmExperienced farmers establishing a qualifying primary-production farming business

Rural Entrepreneur currently specifies at least CAD $300,000 net worth and CAD $100,000 investment, alongside experience, language, ownership and community requirements. Its exploratory visit and Community Support Letter process is separate from Rural Renewal worker endorsement.

Each business pathway has its own financial, qualification, ownership and implementation conditions. Assess the relevant stream before signing a purchase agreement or transferring money. Purchasing an Alberta business does not itself secure nomination or permanent residence.

Prepare a commercially realistic plan as well as an immigration file. Separate qualifying investment from acquisition costs, working capital and family expenses. Show how you will actively operate the proposed business and document its performance.

14. Alberta PNP Fees and Processing Time

Provincial serviceFee
Worker EOICAD $135
Worker-stream applicationCAD $1,500
Entrepreneur EOI: specified business streamsCAD $200
Entrepreneur or Farm applicationCAD $3,500
Nomination extension requestCAD $150
204(c) or 205(a) support-letter requestCAD $150, subject to applicable exceptions
Reconsideration requestCAD $250

These provincial charges are separate from federal PR, biometrics and work permit fees and the cost of tests, medical examinations, assessments and translations. Review the fee and refund instructions for the particular service.

Alberta publishes inventory and assessment information by stream. Its processing page was updated October 7, 2026, when checked for this article. Reported assessment dates are not a guarantee of an individual decision date.

Separate waiting for selection from provincial assessment and federal processing. Keep a calendar for permit expiry, test validity and application deadlines so that a delay in one stage does not leave another obligation unnoticed.

15. After Nomination: PR and Work Permit Planning

Follow the nomination package and submit the federal PR application before the certificate expires. For an Express Entry-linked nomination, IRCC provides 30 calendar days to accept or reject it. Acceptance adds 600 CRS points, subject to the cap on additional points; a federal invitation and complete application are still necessary.

Base nominations follow the separate non-Express Entry federal process. Use the route specified by your nomination rather than choosing whichever portal appears faster.

Work authorization and support letters

A nomination does not extend a permit or authorize employment. AAIP may consider a 204(c) support-letter request after nomination where its conditions are met; issuance is not guaranteed. Report relevant employment and family changes and follow the instructions for your stream.

Review the Provincial Nominee Work Permit Canada guide and Canada work permit guide alongside your nomination and current permit conditions.

A BOWP is a separate federal option. PNP applicants must satisfy status and PR-stage requirements and have no employment restrictions as a nomination condition. An acknowledgement of receipt alone does not establish every requirement.

Before changing employers, check the provincial file and work authorization together. A change that seems minor in daily employment may affect the evidence supporting nomination or the conditions under which the worker may continue working.

16. Alberta PNP FAQs

Are Alberta PNP, AAIP and AINP the same program?

Alberta PNP refers to AAIP. AINP is the program's former name.

Does CRS 300 guarantee an Alberta nomination?

No. Alberta Express Entry has additional pathway and selection requirements; the federal score alone does not secure an invitation.

Can I apply directly to a worker stream without an invitation?

Current worker intake uses Worker EOI and invitations. Follow the provincial process for the pathway you are pursuing.

Can I apply from outside Canada?

Some pathways permit overseas candidates. Rural Renewal limits their eligible occupations to TEER 0-3, subject to exclusions.

Does every work permit qualify for Alberta Opportunity?

No. Check the eligible-permit list and the specific graduate requirements where applicable.

Does community endorsement guarantee nomination?

No. Community support and AAIP assessment are separate stages.

Can I keep working because I submitted an EOI or received nomination?

Work authorization must be established separately. Assess your current permit and any extension or new application.

Is buying a business enough to obtain permanent residence?

No. Review the relevant entrepreneur pathway and its operation and performance requirements before committing to a transaction.

Where can I compare other provincial programs?

See the PNP pillar guide, British Columbia PNP guide, Ontario PNP guide, Saskatchewan PNP guide and Manitoba PNP guide. Compare them with your genuine settlement plans.
